INVITE YOU TO

THE ANNUAL BRODERERS’ TEXTILE LECTURE

The Country Wife Textile Mural -
the story, conservation and protection for the future
By Linda Connell

The Art Workers Guild, 6 Queen Square, London WC1N 3AT
Monday 22 November 2021 at 6pm followed by light refreshments.

Made by Constance Howard for the 1951 Festival of Britain, the mural’s construction and story is a fascinating reflection of the social history of its time. Using photographs of the 4.5m high x 5m wide 3D mural, Linda will highlight aspects of the construction, revealing techniques and hidden details of how the mural was made on such a large scale at a time of rationing & austerity and how it is now being conserved for the future.
Linda is Director of the National Needlework Archive based near Newbury, Berkshire and has spent her working life in craft education, and research. She has trained at Loughborough Art College, University of Nottingham and Southampton University. Linda will be joined for the lecture by Wendy Hickson, Textile Conservator who is also responsible for leading the volunteer conservators working on The Country Wife.
